While there are people who believe that doing anything to these rifles degrades their value, I disagree. I believe that as long as you don't try anything fancy (sandpaper, stains, etc) and simply wipe off the old finish and wipe on the new (with the right recipe), you've done nothing but increase the value and take proper care of a beautifully made rifle.
So when I recently purchased a rifle off auction that needed some care, I proceeded to do just that. I'm in the early stages and here's what it looks like now:
